MIE Sharktooth

Telemetric, Safety Critical, Temperature Monitoring System

Sharktooth® is a telemetric monitoring system used to monitor up to 12 people in harsh environments such as in environmental chambers. It is designed to provide real-time monitoring of body temperature and ECG signals where subjects are exposed to extreme environments such as sub-zero or tropical conditions.

A waterproof version is available for those wishing to test subjects in test tanks. Sharktooth has been designed to measure in real-time, multiple body temperatures and ECG in up to 12 subjects simultaneously. Our patented Bluetooth technology has allowed us to develop this multi channel, multi transmitter technology that has not been possible before.

Sharktooth can work in environmental chambers, hypobaric chambers, in the open laboratory and also outside in the field. The waterproof version allows you to test divers underwater to depths of 2m when used in tanks, by using an umbilical antenna to the surface.

Sharktooth allows you to observe safety critical parameters such as core temperatures, skin surface temperatures, ECG waveforms, heart rate etc. It has user definable alarm settings for temperatures and heart rate and stores all data to disc. All the data can be replayed or exported to file for use with propriety software packages such as Excel or Math packages.

The transmitters last for 8-hours before recharging is required and can be used up to 100m from the receiver.

MIE Sharktooth MIE Sharktooth Components

Sharktooth Hardware

The Sharktooth system comprises of the following components:

  • Receiver unit
  • 1x Local antenna
  • 1x External directional antenna
  • Charging station complete with mains cable
  • Optional Flight case

Each transmitter is supplied with the following transducers:

  • 1 x ECG connecting cable
  • 4 x skin thermistors
  • 2 x aural thermistors
  • 1 x rectal thermistor

Standard Transmitters

Standard Sharktooth Transmitters

Standard, non-waterproof models have no water protection. An optional splash-proof bag is available for standard models which provides protection from moisture and splashes. Ideal for use in very hot, humid conditions.

Waterproof Transmitters

Standard Sharktooth Transmitters

Waterproof transmitters are fully submersible up to a depth of 2m and operate at this depth using special antennae which float on the surface (connected by an umbilical cable). The aerial, float and a special key-fob are included with each waterproof transmitter.

A maximum of 6 transmitters can be used simultaneously per system. Up to two systems (12 transmitters) can be used in the same vicinity without causing interference to one another.

Sharktooth Wall Antenna

The receiver unit can be used with its own external antenna, or if greater operating range is required, it can be used with the external high gain antenna. The receiver runs from the USB cable and therefore can be used with a laptop computer completely free from the mains power supply.
The external antenna can be wall mounted or placed on a tripod. The face of the external antenna should be arranged to face the transmitter units for maximum gain.

Sharktooth Software

The Temperature View provides 7 thermistor readings for each subject (T1 to T7) along with 3 user-definable calculated readings (C1 to C3). The calculated readings allow you to provide results using simple equations to derive figures from the other sensor values. For example, you could define a calculated reading to provide the mean average value of two thermistor values.

Temperature View

The colour of each reading is dependent upon its current value in relation to user definable thresholds. Values falling within or above or below a given threshold are coloured differently

A total of four thresholds (two upper and two lower) can be configured for each temperature sensor or calculated value. Upon rising above an upper threshold or falling below a lower threshold, an alarm condition is triggered. Upon passing the first threshold, the value is coloured light red (upper) or light blue (lower) to alert you that your attention may be required. Upon passing the second threshold, the value is coloured pure red or pure blue and an audible alarm is sounded to draw your attention more urgently. This alarm condition will continue until the value returns within the defined threshold levels.

Sharktooth Temperature Threshold

The ECG View indicates the real-time ECG signal of each subject along with their current heart rate (averaged over the last few beats). The heart rate values change colour according to their level in relation to user definable thresholds. It is possible to define four threshold levels – the behaviour of which is identical to that discussed previously. Each threshold value can be individually defined for each subject/transmitter.

Clicking on a given heart rate value allows you to view the trend for that subject’s heart rate (up to the last 40 minutes). The trend will automatically be graphed at the foot of the Detail View.

Clicking on a given ECG trace allows you to view that subject’s ECG trace in more detail. The selected ECG will automatically be graphed at the foot of the Detail View.

In the event you see something of interest or concern in the live ECG trace, the software incorporates a mini ECG recording strip facility complete with the ability to roll-back in time. Pressing the spacebar or clicking ‘ECG Record’ in the SharkTooth Main Window, activates this facility and performs a mini ECG recording.

It then continues to capture the ECG for an additional number of seconds (a further 40 by default) so you can determine if the ECG event is repeated. The ECG of all subjects is captured by this facility. During the capture of this mini ECG recording, a yellow circle will be displayed in the upper left of each ECG trace to show the facility is active. When complete, the software will display the mini ECG recording strip (showing both before and after you activated the facility).

If necessary, you can re-order the Detail View by dragging the top, middle or bottom section to its desired position. Alternatively, simply re-click on the signals or trends you require in the other windows, in the order you would prefer them to be displayed. All views can be displayed on a single screen, or split over 3 separate screens depending on your computer hardware.
